In the remixed version of “Champagne Shit” from her latest album, The Age of Pleasure, Janelle Monáe pays homage to Atlanta.
As a teenage girl, the Kansas-native began building her Wondaland empire after moving to the Georgia hotspot and meeting such collaborators as Chuck Lightning and Nate Wonder, who produced the single. Latto‘s contribution reflects the same drive and artistry in the same entertainment space, with additional influence from Quavo that puts the city on the ultimate pedestal.
During his lyrical contribution, the Migos rapper says “Bring some models and bring me more bottles/’Cause we drinking champagne shit/How much I spend on this ice on my collar/And I got a champagne wrist/We gon’ drink ’til we faint now it’s tasting like water,” “Proud of the times when we came from the bottom/Right now I’m hot, it’s time to go harder/How we keep winnin’, because I’m a starter/Gotta make sure that we protect the energy/Spray the champagne, they remember me.”
Latto works her way into the second verse with “On my champagne shit/How you get the lamb, bitch, it’s all in the lips/All in the hips/Whole lotta bad bitches, all in the vill.” “I can’t wait to pop off/College girl, I’m tryna pay your tuition/Red bone kissing, Casamigos pissin’/Tryna get home to the D like a piston.”
During her early 2023 interview with Rolling Stone, Monet stated “I think being an artist gets lonely.” “Most people don’t understand what’s going on in my brain. Community has been so helpful to me; it’s beautiful that I have a title called The Age of Pleasure because it actually re-centers me. It’s not about an album anymore. I’ve changed my whole fucking lifestyle.”
