The trend setting singer/songwriter whose 1995 single ‘I Kissed a Girl’ was the first openly gay song to reach the Billboard Top 20, Jill Sobule has died in a house fire.
Passing away at the age of 66, Sobule’s team released a formal statement informing the public she had passed away in the early morning hours after a house fire engulfed her home in Woodbury, Minnesota.
“Jill Sobule was a force of nature and human rights advocate whose music is woven into our culture.” “I was having so much fun working with her. I lost a client & a friend today. I hope her music, memory, & legacy continue to live on and inspire others,” penned her manager, John Porter, in the press release.
After it was included in the soundtrack for the 1995 comedy movie, ‘Clueless,’ starring Alicia Silverstone, another Sobule-penned single, ‘Supermodel,’ became a follow up hit.
Throughout her career, the American-born musician published 12 studio LPs as well as an autobiographical musical titled ‘F**k 7th Grade.’
“I was fortunate enough to get to know Jill beyond a professional relationship.” “No one made me laugh more. Her spirit and energy shall be greatly missed within the music community and beyond,” said the singer’s agent Craig Grossman.
