In a series of twenty American postage stamps – including photography of images of still-life, sunflowers and a teapot – photographer and activist Linda McCartney will be honored by the United States Postal Service.
“Linda McCartney had a multifaceted career as a photographer, musician, cookbook author and animal rights activist.” “Her photography was connected to every facet of her nearly four-decade creative career, from capturing the spirit of the Sixties through intimate portraits of iconic musicians to documenting everyday life through authentic snapshots,” announced USPS.
A passionate animal rights activist, and the wife of former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney, the photographer (born Linda Eastman,) shot some of the biggest stars of the 1960s including The Doors, Otis Redding, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa. And her image of a young Eric Clapton in 1968 made her the first woman photographer to have her work featured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.
Later co-founding Paul’s post-Beatles band, Wings, in which she played keyboards, Linda died in 1998 from breast cancer at the age of 56.
Come September 25, the stamps will be available for purchase at USPS branches throughout the United States.
