Following the country’s August 10 earthquake in Chocó Department that killed at least 331 people and injured thousands more, Beyoncé has committed $1,000,000.00 to the relief efforts in Colombia.
On Wednesday (8.26,) the superstar singer/songwriter announced that she would be making a “personal donation,” the funds for which will go towards organizations working on the ground in the nation, primarily those providing food and housing supplies.
“The earthquake caused severe loss of life and critical injuries. Many homes were completely demolished living residents without shelter.” “The epicenter of the earthquake was approximately three miles east of San Jose del Palmar, approximately 150 miles from Bogota. The earthquake was felt in cities across the country. Multiple cities have sustained damage to buildings, infrastructure, and roads, critically affecting the food supply,” said a spokesperson, who urged fans to visit the websites of Food For The Poor and World Central Kitchen if they wanted to support ongoing relief efforts.
Not the first musician to demonstrate compassion and financial support, earlier this month, Shakira pledged $1,250,000.00 to build new schools in the region affected by the devastating earthquake in her home country, adding:
“Beloved Colombia, my heart is with everyone who felt this earthquake today and with the families who are going through moments of anguish. In times like these, we Colombians know how to come together and support one another.”
