Hozier On Saturday Night Live: Look + Listen

For his second stint as musical guest on Saturday Night Live, Hozier performed his 2014 hit “Too Sweet,” and the Pogues‘ 1987 song “Fairytale of New York.”

When he debuted on SNL in 2014, the singer/songwriter (born Andrew John Hozier-Byrne) played his award winning “Take Me to Church,” as well as “Too Sweet,” a “tough, catchy retro-R&B groove,” wrote Rolling Stone who placed it in the 17th spot on their list of the top songs of the first half of the year.

Hozier’s current EP, Unheard, which he released in March, features four songs originally intended for his 2023 LP, Unreal Unearth. One of them was “Too Sweet,” the creation of which he described to Rolling Stone in a recent interview, as well as his decision to leave it off the album.

“Maybe it’s the pessimist in me,” he said. “I was like, ‘People don’t want to hear this stuff, we’ll just put it away.’” As it turned out, the composition was the artist’s highest-charting single since “Take Me to Church.”

For this second song, the 37-year old singer/songwriter returned to the SNL stage with a cover of the Irish folk ballad that appeared on the Pogues’ 1988 album If I Should Fall from Grace of God. Reissued three times over the years, The Christmas-themed track has performed particularly well around the holidays in the United Kingdom and Ireland since around the turn of the century.

In November, Hozier wrapped up his Unreal Unearth tour in New Zealand and his most recent show in the United States was in September at Maryland’s All Things Go Music Festival. Currently, his next scheduled date in the states is in Milwaukee in June.
