Marking her second charting single of the year, Belinda Carlisle‘s “If U Go” enters the Billboard’s Adult Contemporary survey at #30.
Part of Carlisle’s Kismet EP collection on BMG, legendary songwriter Diane Warren, penned all five tracks, reviving a partnership between the two talents, 35 years since the former Go-Go sent the writer’s “I Get Weak” to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1988.
Earlier this year, Belinda extended her Billboard chart history by entering Digital Song Sales with “Gonna Be You,” another Warren-written composition from the comedy 80 for Brady that brought Carlisle together with Dolly Parton, Cyndi Lauper, Gloria Estefan and Debbie Harry.
In addition to her current single, following its arrival on CD and vinyl Kismet hit #40 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart earlier this month.
Upon the EP’s release Carlisle mused to Billboard about Warren “I can’t say ‘no’ to her.” “The fact that she gave me these amazing songs is like a gift.”
Making for a pseudo The Go-Go’s reunion, “If U Go” features Charlotte Caffey on backing vocals, although Carlisle said that Warren hadn’t originally planed for two members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band to sing that line.
Belinda hits the Billboard airplay chart for the first time since 1990, when “Summer Rain” reached chart on the Adult Contemporary list, one of four top 10s on that chart, including “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” (#7 in 1987); “I Get Weak” (#9 in 1988); “Circle in the Sand” (#5 in1988); and “Leave a Light On” (#8 in 1989).
In an interview with Billboard Carlisle stated “I always said that if I was going to record pop in the same vein that I did in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, it would have to be on par with those songs,” . “I’m not going to record a song just to record it.” And about her Kismet tracks Carlisle said, “This was five out of five.” Warren “didn’t show me anything else, and I loved them all.”
