Following a protracted legal battle against his former manager, Chance the Rapper has prevailed with a Chicago judge ordering Pat Corcoran to relinquish commissions and compensation tied to merchandising deals that could exceed $1,500,000.00
The legal news comes after the musician (born Chancelor Bennett,) came out on top at a March jury trial against the former manager over contract and interference claims, resolving the remaining breach of fiduciary duty claim that was left to the court to decide.’
In an interview with Rolling Stone, the superstar rapper/writer said “I’m grateful to finally close this chapter of my life and can’t wait to eventually tell my side of the story.” “I’m thankful to the courts and, more importantly, to God for remaining faithful.”
Though the ruling did not specify the exact amount Corcoran must repay, representatives for Chance noted that he would likely have to forfeit as much as $1.5 million in management fees paid by the rapper, in addition to what they described as “kickbacks” from merchandise vendors.
Rejecting the rapper’s request for punitive damages, the judge stated “The court ruled there is no basis for Chance’s claim of more than $10 million in damages” adding “We are pleased that the court agreed with Pat that he performed years of valuable work that Bennett accepted and profited from.”
