Singer Rubby Pérez Dies In Dominican Club Disaster

Following the collapsed rood at a Dominican Republic club, some 60 people have died, including renowned merengue singer Rubby Pérez.

With more than 150 patrons hospitalized, the disaster occurred during Pérez’s performance of such chart-topping hits such as ‘Buscando Tus Besos,’ and while the superstar singer was initially listed among the missing, local reports have since confirmed the Caribbean star’s passing after he was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Unclear as to what caused the roof of the Jet Set, a renowned club in Santo Domingo’s National District to collapse, a statement by the club owners confirmed that they are “fully and transparently cooperating with the relevant authorities to assist the victims and clarify what happened”.

Rubby’s manager, Enrique Paulino, whose shirt was covered in blood, told reporters at the scene that the concert began shortly before midnight Tuesday (4.08,) with the roof collapsing almost an hour later that also killed the group’s saxophonist, according to The Associated Press.

In a social media statement on X, Santo Domingo mayor Carolina Mejía de Garrigó wrote “Our city wakes up to a terrible tragedy that occurred at the Jet Set nightclub. My deepest sympathy goes out to the families still waiting for news of their loved ones.”

In addition to Pérez, among those rescued was former Major League Baseball pitcher Octavio Dotel who was also transported to a hospital, but also did not survive.
