Penned as a “peace offering” to her father, Miley Cyrus just released ‘Secrets’ along with an accompanying music video.
On Friday (9.19.) the superstar singer/songwriter dropped the deluxe version of her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful, which included the ‘Secrets’ bonus track recorded with former Fleetwood Mac members Mick Fleetwood and Lindsey Buckingham.
Taking to social media the 32-year old songstress described how she was inspired to write the song amid the reconciliation with her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, from whom she was estranged for several years.
“This song was written as a peace offering for someone I had lost for a time but always loved. In my experience, forgiveness and freedom are one and the same.” “Thank you to Lindsey Buckingham & Mick Fleetwood for bringing magic to the music.” “This song is for my dad.”
Speaking about the song during an appearance on the Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky podcast in June, the Miley reflected on how she navigated some difficult emotions while writing the song, saying:
“I wrote this song about my dad, because I wanted him to tell me, even though they were secrets, even though I didn’t really wanna know, I wanted to be the one he felt safe enough to tell me the things that were damning and damaging to the family,” she stated. “But I wanted him to think that, as a middle child, I’m old enough that I could take some of that, you know. And I always wanted my family to feel like I was the safe place, that I always had the white flag when they came to talk to me.”
Revealed that Miley had sent him the track as a gift for his 64th birthday, in August, Billy Ray shared a preview of ‘Secrets’ via Instagram.
