With bidding expected to start at $60,000, John Lennon’s very last autograph is now up for auction thru April 25th at Gottahaverockandroll.com.
While recording at The Record Plant in New York City on December 7, 1980, Willie Nile and the former Beatle were in the studio when engineer Thom Panunzio called saying, “John broke a string on his guitar. Do you have any extra strings?”
The day after Nelson gave Lennon the extra string the two musicians were back in the studio when Penunzio asked John for an autograph for his friend Karl. John mistakenly thought his signature was for the person who gave him the guitar strings the day before and therefore signed the Record Plant tape sticker “To Karl, who strung me along, thanks John Lennon 1980″.
In addition to his autograph, Lennon drew a self-portrait caricature and then left the studio by limousine at approximately 10:30 pm and arrived at The Dakota at approximately 10:50pm when he was shot dead.
This would be the last autograph John Lennon would ever sign and is considered by many to be the most important autograph in Rock and Roll History.
After being sold for $72,000 in 2012, Gotta Have Rock & Roll is excited to bring this autograph back to auction.
