Addressing his teenage alcoholism, Jelly Roll has gone on the record about his first Alcoholics Anonymous meetings at the age of 14.
During his recent SiriusXM’s The Highway radio show, the country music superstar opened up about his experiences:
“I don’t fully remember my first real meeting ’cause I was court-ordered at like 14 so I don’t remember it as much as I should.” “But, I definitely remember the first time that I found solace in those rooms.” “And how much stuff I’ve taken from them rooms.”
Adding that he’d “never been more inspired than leaving an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting or a Narcotics Anonymous meeting,” the musician (born Jason Bradley DeFord) went on to say “You know, the good ones are like good theatre. They’ll make you listen, you’ll learn, you’ll laugh and you’ll cry.”
Walking his talk, the net profits from the pre-orders of his latest album, Beautifully Broken, will go to organizations helping those who struggle with mental health issues and addiction.
In an interview with The New York Times Magazine, the multi-award winning artist wants to be intentional with all his new projects, stating:
“I’m looking for songs that have a purpose.” “When I go to put out a song under the name Jelly Roll, I think to myself, Why? Because for the first time in my life, it has nothing to do with a financial decision. I’m well past putting out anything for money.”
