The second iteration of the ill-fated Fyre Festival 2 has been postponed, with entrepreneur and ex-convict Billy McFarland reading a message to ticket holders:
“The event has been postponed and a new date will be announced. We have issued you a refund. Once the new date is announced, at that time, you can repurchase if it works for your schedule.”
Originally slated to take place May 30 thru June 2 – with tickets ranging from $1,400.00 to $25,000.00 along with a $1,000,000.00 package – days after the event went on sale in February, the festival was immediately met with obstacles.
Touted to take place on Isla Mujeres off the coast of Mexico, the local tourism board admitted they had “no knowledge” of the event, despite festival founder McFarland arguing that he and his partners had “remained in communication with local and state government to ensure full compliance and a successful event that benefits the local economy”.
In a March statement to The Guardian, the tourism directorate of Isla Mujeres, Edgar Gasca said the “event does not exist,” subsequent to which McFarland promptly took to social media, disputing the claims on Instagram.
The updated details surrounding Fyre Festival 2 came eight years after the original festival ended in a disaster, leaving attendees stranded in the Bahamas, McFarland pleading guilty to fraud, and sentenced to prison.
At press time, a new date for the Fyre Festival 2 has yet to be announced.
