Following a successful run in London, on Friday (11.10,) producers announced that Tammy Faye, Elton John‘s successful musical about Tammy Faye Bakker is heading to Broadway for the 2024-2025 season.
Featuring the music of Sir Elton, lyrics by Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears, and a book by playwright James Graham, Ruper Goold is the director and Lynne Page is in charge of the choreography for the UK version that premiered at the Almeida Theatre in 2022 and was nominated for Best Musical at the Olivier Awards.
The Tammy Faye musical follows the 2021 release of The Eyes of Tammy Faye, the biopic that captured “the extraordinary rise, fall, and redemption” of the legendary evangelist, starring Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield. The film addressed the rise of the Faye/Bakker marriage as they helmed the largest religious broadcasting network and theme park until their downfall while facing fraud charges and Bakker was accused of rape.
Elton John’s prior Broadway musicals include The Lion King, Aida, and Billy Elliot: The Musical, yet the casting, venue, and production dates for the Broadway edition have yet to be announced.
