Co-written with lyricist Bernie Taupin, and originally released in November of 1973, Elton John expressed his delight over the ongoing success of ‘Step into Christmas.’
Certified platinum for sales of 1,000,000 by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) earlier this month, on Tuesday (12.23,) the superstar singer/songwriter took to Instagram with a photo of himself posing with two platinum record plaques, along with the caption:
“A special Christmas present to me!””Step Into Christmas has gone platinum in the US and 4× platinum in the UK. To think a song released over 50 years ago is still part of so many people’s festivities (and even sat in the UK Top 10 again this year!) is very special.” “Thank you to everyone who keeps stepping into Christmas, year after year!”
Bested by such festive tracks as Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You,’ Wham!’s ‘Last Christmas’ and Kylie Minogue’s new ‘XMAS,” Elton’s title peaked at #9 on the U.K. singles chart this year.
In 2024, the 78-year old dropped a new video for ‘Step into Christmas,’ featuring Cara Delevingne as John, complete with oversized glasses and a waistcoat, about which Elton told The Guardian:
“When someone suggested the idea of her playing me in a riff on the 1973 Step into Christmas video, I just thought it was the perfect opportunity. Thank God Cara thought the same, because it came out great.”
