On Friday (10.27,) Depeche ModeΒ appeared onΒ The Tonight ShowΒ and performed βWagging Tongueβ from their Memento MoriΒ full length.
Since the release of their latest album (2022), the legendary electronic duo first played their debut singleΒ βGhosts Againβ onΒ The Late ShowΒ in February, and thenΒ played that song again onΒ Jimmy Kimmel Live in March. And the night before their Madison Square Garden show in Manhattan, Depeche Mode finished out the 11 p.m.-hour circuit with a visit to Jimmy Fallonβs show.
When Depeche initially first unveiled theΒ Memento Mori,Β LP Rolling StoneΒ cited βWagging Tongueβ among the LP’s highlights, adding that the track was a rare songwriting collab between the bandβs Dave Gahan and Martin Gore. About the song Rolling StoneΒ wrote:
βGahan sings about feeling sadness βwhen you watch another angel dieβ over sparkly New Wave synths that recall the groupβs earliest work.” βThe lyrics, which Gahan sings ominously, could be a metaphoric indictment of politicians needing to act on gun safety or Gahan could be singing about rising above personal obstacles, but, either way, with the shimmery keyboard backdrop, the words have a way of sticking in your brain.β
Depeche Mode is now half way through the second leg ofΒ their North American tour, which ends on December 15 at the Los AngelesβΒ Crypto.comΒ Arena.
