To memorialize late drummer Charlie Watts, the Rolling Stones will change their infamous lips-and-tongue logo from red to black.
When the legendary rockers return to the stage next week they will pay tribute to Watts with their new logo design. Band members Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood have agreed to show an archival montage of Watts during their next shows and the new emblem will be used on merchandise and tour visuals.
Charlie Watts died Aug. 24 at the age of 80 and was put to rest early last week in a private funeral in the UK.
At the time of the drummer’s passing, the band, as well as friends and fans, paid tribute to the musician. “It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Charlie Watts,” the trio’s statement read. “He passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family. Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also a member of the Rolling Stones one of the greatest drummers of his generation. We kindly request that the privacy of his family, band members and close friends is respected at this difficult time.”
At the time Elton John wrote “A very sad day. Charlie Watts was the ultimate drummer. The most stylish of men, and such brilliant company. My deepest condolences to Shirley, Seraphina and Charlotte. And of course, The Rolling Stones.” And Joan Jett tweeted “Charlie Watts was the most elegant and dignified drummer in rock and roll. He played exactly what was needed — no more — no less. He is one of a kind.”
