As part of his brand new album, Will Smith addresses slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars.
On Friday (3.28,) the rapper/superstar actor dropped Based on a True Story in which he speaks out about the infamous Oscars slap heard ’round the world.
Smith wastes no time in coming clean about the incident during the LP’s first song, ‘Int. Barbershop – Day’ that starts with the line, “Will Smith is cancelled. Featuring various voices exchanging rumors and thoughts about the star, one says “Who the f**k Will Smith think he is?” with another adding, “I ain’t never going to forgive him for that s**t he did.” Other lyrics included “I heard he won the Oscar but he had to give it back/ And you know they only made him do that s**t because he’s Black,” and, “Him and Jada both crazy girl, what you talkin’ bout?/ You better keep his wife’s name out of your mouth.”
The unspeakable incident happened during the 2022 Academy Awards, when Chris Rock, a presenter at the event, made a joke about Will’s estranged wife Jada Pinkett Smith bald head, after which Smith walked on stage and slapped the comedian across face before shouting, “Keep my wife’s name out your f**king mouth!”
Contrary to his new song’s lyrics, however, Smith did not have to return the Best Actor trophy he won that same night, though he has banned from attending the Oscars ceremony for 10 years.
Will Smith referenced the controversy again on the album’s second track, ‘You Lookin’ for Me?’ when he rapped, “Took a lot, I’m back on top/ Y’all gon’ have to get acclimated/ Won’t stop, my s**t still hot/ Even though I won’t get nominated.”
Following 2005’s Lost and Found, Based on a True Story is Will’s first full-length LP in two decades.
