After being disrupted in 2020 and 2021 by the COVID-19 pandemic, for the first time in three years thousands of people are flocking to England’s Glastonbury Festival for the five-day music and performing arts event that officially reopened on Wednesday (6.22.)
Marking its 50th anniversary, the five-decade-old British event has 3,000 performers scheduled, including Billie Eilish, Diana Ross, Kendrick Lamar and Paul McCartney (who, at the age 80, will be the oldest solo headline performer.)
Earlier in the day festival-goers started queueing up at the gates of Worthy Farm in Somerset, England, after struggling to get to the site given the largest rail strike that Britain’s seen in many years. With 60% of all trains expected to run on Wednesday and more walkouts planned for Thursday and Saturday, hundreds of people waited with their bags at London’s Paddington Station in order to catch a ride to the festival.
Some 200,000 people are expected to attend the music festival, which runs until Sunday (6.26.)
