After she posted a video while ditching her Tesla vehicle, Sheryl Crow confirmed that an armed man barged onto her property.
In February, as means of protesting Tesla executive Elon Musk and U.S. President Donald Trump’s plans to cut federal spending via the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the comedic clip on Instagram showed Crow waving farewell to the car as it was towed away. The superstar singer/songwriter sold the Tesla and subsequently donated the funds to public broadcaster NPR.
In a recent interview with Variety, the Nashville-based entertainer admitted that she didn’t expect the reaction she received following the footage, stating:
“This feels different, because when I came out against Walmart carrying guns (in a 1996 song), not everybody was armed – and certainly I didn’t live in Tennessee, where everybody is armed.” “So yeah, there was a moment where I actually really felt very afraid: A man got on my property, in my barn, who was armed. It doesn’t feel safe when you’re dealing with people who are so committed.”
Sheryl added that she calls Tennessee representative Andy Ogles and Senator Marsha Blackburn “every day” to share her concerns over issues in the community, admitting that she’d post the Tesla video again despite the backlash she received from far-right campaigners.
“I can’t help it. I feel like I’m fighting for my kids. Also, that’s the way I was raised. There have been times when it hasn’t really been fun, but I follow my Atticus Finch dad; I’m very similar to him if I see something that seems unfair, you know?” said the 63-year-old, referring to similarities between her own lawyer father and the protagonist of Harper Lee’s 1960 novel, To Kill a Mockingbird.
