in a letter to a New York federal judge, two of R. Kelly‘s attorneys have requested to withdraw from the case.
Steve Greenberg and Michael Leonard requested withdrawal from the case stating: “Our reasons for withdrawal are significant and it is impossible, in our belief, for us to be able to continue to properly represent Mr. Kelly under the current circumstances,” Greenberg said in a letter to the judge.
Come August, the superstar singer/songwriter is scheduled to appear in federal court on sex trafficking accusations. with Greenberg stating: “Finally, as trial attorneys and in the best interests of the client, we were uneasy professionally with assigning important trial obligations to counsel who had never handled a federal criminal case. This method was not universally embraced.” The attorney also stated that he intends to make a similar motion to the Chicago court overseeing Kelly’s case.
Kelly’s legal team is still comprised of two additional attorneys, Tom Farinella and Nicole Becker who, in a joint statement, told CNN: “The only comment we have at this time is that Mr. Kelly terminated both lawyers prior to filing their motion.” US District Judge Ann M. Donnelly, who must approve Greenberg and Leonard’s withdrawal from the case, has scheduled a status conference on Wednesday at 11 a.m. to examine the subject.
