Janet Jackson is celebrating her birthday by auctioning off a massive amount of personal and professional memorabilia.
In conjunction with her 55th birthday, from May 14-17 the multi-Grammy Award winning artist will be auctioning off more than one thousand of her outfits, multiple tour items and music videos, along with her wedding dress from her secret marriage to dancer Rene Elizondo Jr in 1991.
Along with 100% of sales from an $800.00 limited edition three volume set of auction catalogs, the most famous female Jackson will donate a portion of the auction proceeds to the Christian child sponsorship group Compassion International.
Of particular interest is the original Rhythm Nation Jacket worn during her eponymous 1990 world tour as well as the floor-length metallic silver coat that the songstress donned in her 1995 music video for “Scream” with her brother Michael Jackson. A 17th century-inspired ensemble of cropped riding jacket and thigh high boots worn during her 1993-95 world tour is appraised at $4,000 – $6,000 but what will not be sold is the black leather bustier that was ripped, briefly exposing her breast during the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show with Justin Timberlake.
“Janet has never done an auction before. In fact, we find it very hard to find items at auction, any auction, from Janet Jackson because she’s kept everything,” stated Martin Nolan, executive director of Julien’s Auctions. “It’s cathartic for her… she’s happy to let them go and to raise money for a charity that’s really important to her.”
