Two years following the biggest controversy of his career, on Sunday night (6.30) Will Smith returned to his musical roots at the 2024 BET Awards.
Prior to enjoying massive success in television and film, the former Grammy award winning rapper took the stage at the annual award show that honors the best in Black entertainment.
Smith’s much-anticipated appearance included an uplifting, gospel-tinged performance of his new song, ‘You Can Make It,’ that hinted at the actor’s struggle in the public eye (after he slapped comedian Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards,) including the lyric “Believe me, they tried to bleed Will Smith / In the rearview, I see adversity was the gift,” Smith rapped.
Accompanied by a rousing choir, Smith was surrounded by a circle of flames, while gospel icon Kirk Franklin made a cameo appearance.
Other featured performances at this year’s Los Angeles award show included Lauryn Hill, Victoria Monét, GloRilla, Latto and Ice Spice.
