Three decades since 1996’s The Score, which included mega-hits ‘Ready or Not,’ ‘Fu-Gee-La’ and ‘Killing Me Softly,’ Wyclef Jean has sparked hopes for a new Fugees full length, after confirming that he’s in an “amazing place” with bandmate Lauryn Hill.
Marking the 30th anniversary of The Score, Hill and Jean reunited to perform at Diaspora Calling!, a one-day festival making its UK debut at The National Bowl in Milton Keynes. Hosted by Dave Chappelle, the event will also feature performances from Erykah Badu, Giggs, Fireboy DML, YG Marley and Zion Marley.
Though the musicians did not confirm if a new LP was on the horizon, Jean told the BBC he’s happy to be back performing with Hill, adding “All I can tell you is, man, we’re in God’s hands.” “I’m back with my bandmate!” “So we’re in an amazing place. I think the energy is very important.” And when asked about the possibility of new material, Hill replied, “Absolutely.”
Reflecting on the success of The Score, he insisted the themes from the tracks remain just as relevant today, adding “When you talk about the idea of refugees, look where we are today. We were saying these things 30 years ago. It was never just about us – it was always about the movement.”
The third member The Fugees, Pras Michel, is currently serving a 14-year sentence in a U.S. prison for charges including money laundering and illegal lobbying.
