Lizzo’s Comeback Foiled

During her Monday-published (9.08) interview for Vulture, Lizzo admitted her plans to return to making music “crumbled” amid her legal troubles.

Though she hasn’t decided whether to drop her fifth studio album, the superstar singer/songwriter opened up about the decision to release her ‘Love in Real Life’ and ‘Still Bad’ singles in 2025.

While the musician (born Melissa Jefferson,) had a “playbook” when she unveiled Special in 2022, she admitted not having a clear plan this time around, stating:

“I put out those two singles, and it feels like I had a crash course in what putting music out as a pop artist in 2025 looks like, and it’s… interesting. The industry and the landscape change every year. What worked last year is not going to work this year.” “I am flying by the seat of my pants, which is crazy because I had three years to plan this s**t out, and all of my plans kind of crumbled.”

The now 37-year old performer confirmed that the two lawsuits she’s faced in recent years have taken a toll on her creativity,

In 2023, three former backup dancers filed a lawsuit against the Detroit native, her production company, and her dance captain, Shirlene Quigley, accusing them of sexual harassment, discrimination, and creating a hostile work environment, among other claims.  Designer Asha Daniels filed a similar lawsuit that year.

While several of the lawsuit claims have since been dismissed, the cases are ongoing, and her company, Big Grrrl Big Touring, remains a defendant in the lawsuit involving Daniels.

Though Lizzo denied all allegations, editors at Vulture report that a trial has been scheduled for December of this year.

Despite her legal issues, Lizzo unveiled her third mixtape, My Face Hurts from Smiling, in June, adding “I think I needed to drop those songs so I could subvert that expectation of me because, in turn, it created this new discovery that I really wanted. I wanted people to rediscover who I am and fall in love with her all over again.”
