Legendary frontman with the glam rock band New York Dolls (aka Buster Poindexter in his latter years, David Johansen has passed away after battling stage 4 cancer, which had progressed to a brain tumor. He was 75-years old.
A statement posted on the website specifically created to raise funds for his medical care, read:
“David Johansen passed away peacefully at home, holding the hands of his wife Mara Hennessey and daughter Leah, in the sunlight surrounded by music and flowers.”
The news of David’s passing follows last month’s announcement that the iconic punk rocker was living with cancer, and had recently suffered a broken back.
Taking to her Instagram story account, Johansen’s daughter revealed the details of her father’s condition, writing:
“As some, but not many of you know, David has been in intensive treatment for stage 4 cancer for most of the past decade.” “There have been complications ever since.”
In a statement to Rolling Stone at the time, Johansen, who was the last surviving founding member of the ’70s punk band, said, “We’ve been living with my illness for a long time, still having fun, seeing friends and family, carrying on, but this tumble the day after Thanksgiving really brought us to a whole new level of debilitation.” “This is the worst pain I’ve ever experienced in my entire life. I’ve never been one to ask for help, but this is an emergency. Thank you.”
