Video from Will Smith‘s comeback Based On A True Story tour has endusers curious about specific crowd shots.
According to Rolling Stone, clips from the singer’s concerts feature shots of fans with distorted and blurred faces, or extra fingers and oddly formed hands.
While some have accused Smith of using artificial intelligence to beef up crowd shots, others report that YouTube artificially alters videos uploaded to the platform without the creators’ knowledge.
In last week’s story published in The Atlantic, YouTuber Rhett Shull stated that YouTube is using “AI upscaling” on his videos, that involves dialing up an image’s resolution and detail, adding “I think it’s gonna lead people to think that I am using AI to create my videos. Or that it’s been deepfaked. Or that I’m cutting corners somehow.”
Including a completely imagined video of Mick Jagger, Elton John and Rod Stewart harmonizing at Ozzy Osbourne’s memorial service, the line between reality and illusion has been blurred as AI floods the internet, from fake bands to artificially generated songs to bogus photos of music legends.
Many an artist has called out the use of such technology, with SZA criticizing the damaging use of AI programs that take substantial energy consumption to function, such as ChatGPT and Elon Musk’s chatbot, Grok.
