Following the superstar singer’s world tour announcement, Madonna’s biopic has been scrapped.
According to reliable sources, the previously-announced movie about Madonna’s life has shifted out of development at Universal Pictures.
Set to direct the film herself, last week the artist (born Madonna Louise Ciccone) confirmed that her forthcoming world tour would prevent her from completing the task.
Initially announced in 2020, the as-yet-untitled biopic had been in development through the end of 2022 with Madonna reportedly drafting two scripts covering areas of her creative and personal life.
Following a series of singing and dancing trials with the likes of Florence Pugh, Alexa Demie, Odessa Young, Bebe Rexha, and Julia Garner, to decide who would portray the pop icon, Garner was ultimately chosen to play the lead.
Universal Filmed Entertainment Group Chairman Donna Langley bought the project, and Amy Pascal (who last worked with Madonna last worked on the 1982 baseball movie A League of Their Own) signed on to produce. Sara Zambreno and Madonna’s manager Guy Oseary were set to executive produce.
Before agreeing to helm her own biopic, Madonna directed the 2008 United Kingdom dramedy Filth and Wisdom and 2011 historical romance W.E.
At press time no updated schedule has been confirmed concerning continued development or a production start date and Madonna’s shows in New York, London, Paris, and other cities on the musician’s tour reportedly sold out in minutes.
