A new study based on Reddit‘s music communities has discovered which music genres have the most positive impact on fans. The findings conclude that listeners of trance scored amidst the most positive, or as the study puts it, happiest fans. Alternatively, bass heads, particularly fans of dubstep and drum ‘n’ bass, scored among the least positive of online communities surveyed.
The study, which was conducted by OnBuy, took aim at 27 subreddits of different musical categories and gauged their positive effect by the amount of upbeat contributions to the discussion. According to the results, genres outside of the EDM realm such as jazz, metal, and opera were the highest scoring online communities, ranging between 77 and 56 positive mentions per 100 comments. Trance followed closely behind boasting 50 positive mentions per 100 comments while drill, dubstep, and drum ‘n’ bass genres scored far lower – between 11 and 29 positive comments per 100.
While many factors go into why posts may sway results in either a positive or negative direction, it should be noted that trance-friendly countries have started to open up their clubs to artists and shows post pandemic, whereas dubstep-friendly spaces have stayed mostly shut down.
