Professionally known as The Weeknd, Abel Tesfaye is slated to create, produce, and act in a forthcoming HBO series.
Following in the footsteps of Issa Rae, Lena Dunham, and Lisa Kudrow, The Weeknd along with Reza Fahim, and Sam Levinson have co-created the show, dubbed The Idol (Euphoria, Malcolm & Marie).
According to a popular news source, The Idol will feature “a female pop singer who begins a romance with an enigmatic L.A. club owner who is the leader of a secret cult.” Tesfaye, whose overall demeanor matches the description, is our best guesstimate for the enigmatic hidden cult leader. Not a first time actor or writer, Able had a notable screen role in Uncut Gems starring Adam Sandler, and the Canadian-born artist also co-wrote an episode of American Dad last year.
Born in Toronto, The Weeknd was raised in Scarborough, Canada and began his singing career in 2009 by anonymously uploading his song “Do It” on YouTube subsequent to which he met music executives and (his) current managers Sal Slaiby and Amir Esmailian two years later when they formed XO Records.
