Johnny Marr has slammed Donald Trump for using a song by the Smiths at one of his presidential campaign rallies, and the guitarist is committed to stopping the campaign team from using the band’s composition during their political events.
In a recent post by an X/Twitter user, video footage from a 2023 South Dakota rally features ‘Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want’ in the background as the crowd waits for the event to start along with the caption, “You actually hear the Smiths more often than you’d think at 2024 Trump rallies.”
“As Trump is scheduled to take the stage in Laconia, the new addition to his pre rally music is The Smiths,” another user wrote, concerning the ex-president’s most recent rally in Laconia, New Hampshire on Monday (1.22.)
Taking to social media, Marr shared the post and stated that the Smiths would no longer be heard at Trump rallies, writing “Ahh…right…OK.” “I never in a million years would’ve thought this could come to pass. Consider this s**t shut right down right now.”
Not the first musician to speak out against the use of their repertoire at Trump-related events, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones and Queen, among others, have all publicly voiced their objections.
