Announced via new trailer and poster, popular streaming service Peacock has announced that Girls5eva starring Sara Bareilles, Paula Pell, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps, and Ashley Park will be released on Thursday, May 6th.
Executive produced by Tina Fey, Girls5eva follows a one-hit-wonder 90’s girl group who reunites to give their pop star aspirations another shot after a teenage rapper samples one of their songs. “They may be grown women juggling spouses, children, jobs, debt, aging parents, and shoulder pain, but can’t they also be Girls5eva?”
No simple task as the show’s trailer demonstrates, Dawn points out that “the messages in our songs are bad” and some of the character’s lives outside of the group are far from perfect as Wickie claims to be all over the globe, while in reality, she works at the airport and Summer’s hopes of joining The Real Housewives haven’t come true despite eight auditions.
The show’s interest in making the music truly authentic is reflected in the participation of two actors — Goldsberry, a Tony winner for “Hamilton,” and Bareilles, a well-known recording artist— and it succeeds in skewering a certain type of former pop sound.
Tina Fey is most well known for her work on Mean Girls (2004), Baby Mama (2008), Date Night (2010), Megamind (2010), Muppets Most Wanted (2014), Sisters (2015), Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (2016), Wine Country (2019), and Soul (2020). The new series is executively produced by: Meredith Scardino, Jeff Richmond, Tina Fey, Robert Carlock, David Miner, Eric Gurian. Jeff Richmond, Fey’s husband and the man behind 30 Rock’s score, is an executive producer and composer for the show. In similar fashion to 30 Rock, the show is more joke and humor-driven, rather than story and plot.
