Celebrities Pay Homage To Pope Francis

On Monday morning (4.21) following the passing of Pope Francis, Russell Crowe and Patti Smith were just some of the celebrities who’ve paid their respects.

Following a protracted period of ill health, the leader of the Catholic Church passed away at his Rome residence in The Vatican. He was 88-years old.

Prompting an outpouring of tributes from celebrities, politicians and other public figures on social media, superstar thespian Crowe met the pontiff in 2014, and took to X earlier today with picture of the Rome skyline and writing “A beautiful day in Rome, but, a sad day for the faithful. RIP Francis.”

Now 78-years old, Smith penned “This is a little flower a dandelion humble yet strong. I saw it this morning and was moved. Farewell dear Pope Francis. Nature and poetry and the suffering shall miss their champion,” along with a dandelion growing from a crack in the pavement.

Mourning the religious leader with whom she met in 2023 and 2024, actress/TV talk show host, Whoopi Goldberg took to Instagram with a photo from one of their meetings and the caption “He was the closest in a long time that seemed to remember that Christ’s love enveloped believer and none believer (sic).” “Sail on Pope Frances with your love of humanity & Laughter.”

Having met the religious leader in 2016, Antonio Banderas praised the pope with the words “kindness, love, and mercy to the neediest people.”

Eva Longoria thanked him “for being an ally to many of us and speaking up for the marginalized,” adding “Your compassion, kindness and humility will always be remembered.”

The religious leader became Pope Francis in 2013.
