The latest in an ever-growing series of copyright lawsuits against musicians who use previously recorded music as their own, Miley Cyrus has been accused of copying Bruno Mars in her hit song ‘Flowers.’
Filed by Tempo Music Investments, the investment platform claiming to share copyright for Bruno’s prior hit ‘When I Was Your Man,’ Cyrus is being sued for copyright infringement.
According to TMZ, on Monday (9.16) documents filed in Los Angeles federal court allege Miley’s 2023 hit single shares “many musical similarities” to Mars’ 2012 ballad. The lawsuit also claims the harmony, melody, chorus, lyrics and chord progression of ‘Flowers’ were “intentionally” taken from ‘When I Was Your Man.’
According to the claim “It is undeniable based on the combination and number of similarities between the two recordings that Flowers would not exist without When I Was Your Man.”
‘Flowers’ co-writers Gregory Hein and Michael Pollack are also named in the lawsuit with Tempo Music Investments seeking yet-to-be determined damages and demanding that Miley Cyrus be stopped from distributing and performing the song. Bruno Mars, however, is not named as a plaintiff in the documents.
After the song was a #1 international charter, Cyrus took home Record of the Year for ‘Flowers’ at the 2024 Grammy Awards and in her acceptance speech, the superstar songstress said “This award is amazing, but I really hope that it doesn’t change anything, because my life was beautiful yesterday,” she said during
