Michelle Williams’ Tony Award Snub

While the show itself received ten 2025 Tony nominations, Michelle Williams admitted that it “stung a little bit” when she wasn’t recognized for her role in ‘Death Becomes Her,’ the Broadway musical adaptation of the 1992 movie.

About not being nominated for her role as Viola Van Horn, the former Destiny’s Child singer told Variety “It stung a little bit.” “But I was like: Girl, you’re back on Broadway after you didn’t think you ever would be. Who’s the winner? I’m still the winner! That fixed me.”

Explaining that she didn’t think she would be welcomed back into the Broadway community after she withdrew from the revival of the musical ‘Once On This Island’ to receive treatment for depression in 2018, the now 45-year old songstress/actress said:

“I thought I was a liability. I thought I would never be welcomed back into the theatre community.” Insisting that it’s not lost on her that she is originating a role in a musical for the first time, years after thinking Broadway had turned its back on her, Williams added “I don’t take it lightly, or for granted.”

Hardly her first theatrical stint, Michelle’s previous stage credits include Aida, Chicago and The Color Purple.

Hosted by Cynthia Erivo, the 2025 Tony Awards, will take place on Sunday June 8 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
