Six years following his premature passing, Mac Miller‘s family have decided to officially release his 2014 LP, Balloonerism.
Born Malcolm McCormick, the superstar rapper died from an accidental drug overdose in September of 2018 at the age of 26.
For years now, fans of the fallen musician have requested the estate to drop the record, and in an Instagram post on Thursday (11.21,) they confirmed the album’s availability on January 17 of next year.
Having recorded Balloonerism at approximately the same time he recorded his Faces mixtape in 2014, a spokesperson for the family explained that work on the 2015 album GO:OD AM was Miller’s priority at the time.
“It is a project that was of great importance to Malcolm – to the extent that he commissioned artwork for it and discussions concerning when it should be released were had regularly, though ultimately GO:OD AM and subsequent albums ended up taking precedence,” they wrote.
About his new full length, the McCormick family representative added:
“We believe the project showcases both the breadth of his musical talents and fearlessness as an artist. Given that unofficial versions of the album have circulated online for years and that releasing Balloonerism was something that Malcolm frequently expressed being important to him, we felt it most appropriate to present an official version of the project to the world.”
Now available to pre-order, Balloonerism will be the second of Mac’s albums to be released after his shock death following Circles that was unveiled in January 2020.
