The latest in a series of legal issues, Lizzo is now being sued for alleged copyright infringement over a song that has yet to be commercially released.
After the composition ‘I’m Goin’ In Till October,’ (aka ‘Good Jeans’,) blew up on TikTok and Instagram earlier this year, attorneys for The GRC Trust have filed a lawsuit against the superstar singer/songwriter and her record company, Atlantic Records.
According to TMZ, the lawyers allege that Lizzo sampled and copied both instrumental and vocal elements from their copyrighted work, ‘Win or Lose (We Tried),’ without proper permission.ย
A representative for the musician (born Melissa Viviane Jefferson) expressed their concern about being sued over an unreleased song, stating:
“We are surprised that The GRC Trust filed this lawsuit.” “To be clear, the song has never been commercially released or monetised, and no decision has been made at this time regarding any future commercial release of the song.”
According to the lawsuit, the attorneys claim that both parties tried to reach an agreement about sampling the original composition, but never worked out a deal. As a result, Lizzo has been accused of knowingly using their copyrighted work for commercial gain without paying to license it.ย
In addition to damages, the trust is seeking an injunction to block the exploitation of its song.ย
The copyright infringement complaint is the latest legal setback for Lizzo, who, in 2023 faced a series of lawsuits from former employees, alleging sexual and racial harassment, weight-shaming, and a hostile work environment.
In 2024, a judge rejected the artist’s request to dismiss the entire case filed by three former backup dancers, and while dismissed claims of fat-shaming and disability discrimination, the sexual harassment and racial and religious discrimination allegations were upheld.
