Celebrating a star-studded lineup of the nation’s most “acclaimed and renowned performers,” Donald Trump dolled out medals to this year’s Kennedy Centre Honorees in the Oval Office.
Donning a tuxedo, the American president awarded gold-and-navy medallions to singers Gloria Gaynor and George Strait, and members of the iconic rock band KISS, about whom Trump said “This is perhaps the most accomplished and renowned class of Kennedy Centre Honourees ever assembled.”
Presented annually since 1978, culminating each December in a gala celebrating five Honorees in the Kennedy Centre Opera House in Washington, DC., the Kennedy Centre Honors are awarded to those in the performing arts for their lifetime of contributions to American culture. And, while the recognition primarily goes to individuals, they have occasionally been given to duos or musical groups, musicals and television shows.
Since its inception, 250+ people have been awarded the Kennedy Centre Honors and Trump presented each of this years recipients with a newly designed medal, created and donated by Tiffany & Co.
The 48th Kennedy Centre Honors ceremony will take place on Sunday evening (12.14.)
