Supermodel and cultural icon Kate Moss shared insights into her friendship with the late David Bowie during her BBC Radio 6 Music interview, hosted by Nick Grimshaw.
Held at the new David Bowie Centre at the V&A East Storehouse, the now 51-year old fashionista detailed her bond with the music icon, her role in collecting his final Brit Award, and her lasting memories of their relationship.
Now available now on BBC Sounds, the UK-based conversation runs concurrent with the release of her podcast, David Bowie: Changeling. When questioned as to why Kate agreed to the project, she explained she “couldn’t really refuse him, even though he’s not around,” and believes he is still “in the ether” thus her interest in the BBC 6 Music project, a station she’s long admired.
Reminiscing about her initial encounter with Bowie during a photoshoot, followed by an intense four-hour interview for Q magazine, the legendary model said the experience was a mix of admiration and torture while sleep-deprived and struggling to keep up with his probing questions. “He really was quite cutting,” she said of David’s incredible sense of humor and curiosity.
One of the most memorable moments of their friendship was when Moss collected Bowie’s Brit Award for Best British Male in 2014. She famously wore his original Kansai Yamamoto Ziggy Stardust jumpsuit. Moss shared that the outfit fit her perfectly, and she was “so happy” to wear it. The singer later told her, “You smashed it,” an affirmation she cherished. The interview also touched on the artist’s fearless creativity, with Moss describing him as someone who had an innate “determination” and was never one to “people please.” Her final memory of Bowie was sending him a video of herself singing “Mr. Bojangles” for his last birthday.
