In honor of her mother, Kate Hudson wanted to pen a song to Goldie Hawn about her childhood.
In 2024, the superstar thespian entered the music space by dropping Glorious, her debut LP and she’s now releasing Glorious (Deluxe), the expanded version that includes additional songs including ‘Right on Time’, which was written about her mom’s upbringing.
Admitting that Goldie got “very emotional” when she learned of her child’s touching tribute, during a recent appearance on ‘The Graham Norton Show’, Kate said “I think she was confused at first but when I told her it was about her childhood, she was very emotional.” “You become the keeper of your parents’ stories so to be able to share it with the world is wonderful. It honors my mom.” “She is magical and completely insane, depending on the day, but she is amazing and such a light.”
About her decision to try music after spending so many years in the acting business, Hudson said:
“I finally took the leap and made a record. There was a moment during the COVID lockdown when we all thought we were going to die so I thought about my creative output and realized I had to do some music no matter what.” “I had tried before in my early 30s but was told I was too old, and I thought that ship had sailed, but after Covid nothing mattered any more. When I finally did it, I thought, ‘Why has it taken me so long?’”
Admitting that her singing career has helped heal the rift with her estranged father and her siblings, the now 44-year-old actress’ parents are Goldie Hawn and Bill Hudson, who divorced a year after she was born. Kate grew up with her mother’s subsequent partner Kurt Russell as her father figure in a blended family with her brother Oliver Hudson and Kurt’s son Wyatt Russell.
Lalania, Zach, and Emily Hudson are Kate’s three additional half-siblings from her biological father Bill’s other relationships, though they’ve been estranged throughout the years until they recently.
In an interview with Variety, Hudson revealed that recording Glorious helped bring her closer to musician father Bill and the other side of the family, stating:
“I think that music brings up something else for me – it’s my connection to my father, the connection to the Hudson side of my life. “It’s a very different side of me that is very connected to a very personal story, which is that relationship or lack of relationship that I’ve had with my father.” “So that’s also very interesting when it comes to music, because I’ve always felt very alone in my life, musically, because I wasn’t connected to the Hudsons.” “And now that I’m more connected to the Hudson side of my family, it really makes sense where it comes from. It’s actually pretty wild, you know?” “So not only has the music been cathartic for me, but it’s also really reconnected me to my siblings and my father. It’s been pretty amazing.”
