Casting aside their wholesome image by adding a hip sister to their lineup, the Jonas Brothers and Molly Shannon shook up Saturday Night Live on April 9.
Re-visiting her classic Sally O’Malley character, the actress-comedian and “SNL” alum played the Jonas Brothers’ newly hired choreographer during a sketch that found the brothers three looking for an artistic perspective to reflect their maturing image.
Fictitious band manager Russell (Kenan Thompson) told choreographers Greto (Chloe Fineman) and Turbo (Bowen Yang), “The boys feel that they’re not a teenybopper band anymore, and they’re about to start their Vegas residency so they want a more mature stage act.” Enter Shannon’s O’Malley, the hyperactive 50-year-old dressed in a ruffled red shirt and matching pants who explained her qualifications by saying “Try five decades of dirty dancing and red pants-ing.” “I’ve got half a century of sizzle in my lady schnitzel. … The grand canyon’s got nothing on me.”
The Jonas Brothers expressed their confidence in O’Malley’s vision, with Nick Jonas saying “We came by ‘cause we had a feeling they may not understand your new concept” after which the the sibling threesome stripped off their outfits to reveal ruffled red shirts and pants matching O’Malley’s and launched into her signature “kick, stretch and kick” combo.
