It was while she accepted an award from the Human Rights Campaign this weekend, that Janelle Monáe took a moment to describe President Donald Trump as a “bully.”
On Saturday (3.22,) during the dinner for the LGBTQ+ advocacy group, the superstar singer/actress made a politically charged speech when she took to the stage at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. When accepting the organization’s Equality Award, Janelle stated:
“Bullies only win when we let them think they can. Here’s the truth, bullying doesn’t stop when we grow up. It doesn’t end when we leave school. It just gets bigger. It rebrands itself. The bully gets elected president” and ending her speech with “Let’s make it clear. We will challenge the giant.”
According to Variety, Monáe stopped short of saying Trump’s name but it was clear about who she was referring as she pledged her alliance to marginalized communities, including immigrants and transgender and nonbinary people, who have been affected by some of Trump’s executive orders.
Not the first time the multi-hyphenate made her feelings about Trump known, in February, Janelle blasted rapper Nelly for performing at one of the leader’s inauguration parties. It was during her freestyle rap at a Grammys after-party, when she fired:
“F**k you Nelly. I used to like Nelly, but then he went to perform for Donald Trump. I care about women, I care about Hispanics. I care about Mexicans, I care about gay people. F**k you Nelly, you sold out. I used to think you was cool. But now you look like a motherf**king fool.”
In addition to Janelle Monáe, Hacks star Hannah Einbinder was honored with the Visibility Award while Emily in Paris star Ashley Park was honored with the Impact Award, which is given to an ally of the LGBTQ+ community.
