In an interview for the April 2022 issue of Vanity Fair magazine, Grimes (born Claire Elise Boucher) confirmed that she and the Tesla founder, Elon Musk, have welcomed a daughter via surrogate in December.
Though the Canadian musician initially referred to the new baby as “Y” during the chat, she later confirmed her daughter’s full name is Exa Dark Sideræl Musk.
Commenting on the choice of baby names (refering to the computing term exaFLOPS and Dark symbolising “the unknown”) Grimes stated “People fear it but truly it’s the absence of photons. Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe.” The name Sideræl is a reference to the The Lord of the Rings character, Galadriel.
Exa wasn’t Grimes’ first pick for her second child she said “I was fighting for Odysseus Musk. A girl named Odysseus is my dream.”
Elsewhere in the convo, the 33-year old singer/songwriter explained that she and the eccentric billionaire opted for surrogacy after she had a difficult pregnancy with their son “X” aka X Æ A-Xii, in 2020.
While the avant-garde couple “live in separate houses”, Grimes indicated that they plan on expanding their brood in the future, saying “This is the best it’s ever been… We just need to be free.” “We’ve always wanted at least three or four.”
Elon, now 50 years old, also has five sons from his marriage to author Justine Wilson.
