Following his prior struggles with prescription drug addiction, Eminem has celebrated 18 consecutive years of sobriety.
Marking the significant milestone, the superstar rapper (born Marshall Mathers III,) took to social media with “XVIII (gold medal emoji)” along with a photo of himself holding a sobriety coin that featuring the phrases “To thine own self be true,” “unity, service, recovery” surrounding the #18 in Roman numerals.
Congratulating the 53-year old rapper on his personal accomplishment were Questlove, who wrote, “Awesome. Keep Goin,” and Big Sean who added “Yessir! Keep it up.”
Speaking candidly about his addiction to prescription medication – including Xanax, Ambien and Vicodin – in his 2025 documentary Stans, Eminem explained that his dependency began in the late 1990s and escalated until a health emergency in 2008, adding:
“I got into this vicious cycle of, ‘I’m depressed so I need more pills.” “Then your tolerance gets so high that you end up overdosing.” “I woke up in the hospital and I didn’t know what happened.” “I woke up in the hospital with tubes in me and s**t and I couldn’t get up, I wanted to move.”
Revealing that missing out on one of his eldest daughter Alaina Marie’s birthdays proved to be the wake-up call that he needed, the Missouri native stated “I cried because it was like, ‘Oh my god, I missed that.” “I kept saying to myself, ‘Do you want to f**king miss this again? Do you want to miss everything? If you can’t do it for yourself, you f**king p**sy, at least do it for them.'” “I realized I’m never doing this again.”
