In a recent interview with Andrew Goldman for his The Originals podcast that aired on Wednesday (3.02), Chaka Khan was questioned about being ranked #29 on Rolling Stone’s list of The 200 Greatest Singers of All Time.
After the show’s host mentioned that Mariah Carey ranked #5, Khan (born Yvette Stevens) humorously alleged that the former Mrs. Mottola may’ve bribed someone at the magazine, stating “That must be payola or some s**t like that.”
As for Adele coming in at #22 and Mary J. Blige ranked at #25, Chaka commented “OK, I quit.” “These are blind b**ches! They are blind as a mother**king bat! They need hearing aids… These must be the children of Helen Keller!”
The former Rufus lead singer also disagreed with Rolling Stone listing Joan Baez at 189, saying “Let’s be honest, the b**ch cannot sing!” “Now, she was a good writer” but Khan was pleased to learn Aretha Franklin topped the list at #1 and Whitney Houston at #2, adding:
“Great… I’m the one who introduced her to Clive (Davis, music producer). And I introduced her to the business.” “I made her mother bring her down to the studio and sing background with me. Her and Luther Vandross. They both sang background for me on my albums.”
A Beyoncé’s supported, Chaka said “I don’t have anything to say about Beyoncé. She’s a great singer… She’s got the chops. She does.”
