Bobby Brown is not at all happy with Britney Spears‘s cover version of his ‘My Prerogative’ classic.
While a number of artists have recorded and/or sampled the former New Edition-member’s 1988 solo single from his Don’t Be Cruel LP, during his Wednesday (4.16,) Club Shay Shay interview with host Shannon Sharpe, Brown admitted that he did not like Spears’s rendition that was included on her 2004 compilation, Greatest Hits: My Prerogative.
“I don’t think they really did justice to any of the samples that they have done to my songs.” “Britney Spears butchered (My) Prerogative. Teddy Riley produced it, but that was a butchering that I couldn’t take it. I cleared it only because it was Britney Spears and I was thinking (she would do a good job). Teddy Riley is doing it too, so you know, but I felt it was a butchering,” said the oft-times controversial R&B singer.
While Teddy Riley produced the original and is also credited as a songwriter on both Brown’s and Britney’s versions, it was actually the Swedish production duo of Bloodshy & Avant that produced Spears’s version.
Adding that he always requests to hear a cover of one of his songs before allowing it to be recorded, the 56-year old Brown stated “Yes, I gotta hear it.” “Because you don’t know what these kids will say these days. These kids will say some s**t that you don’t want your song associated with.”
