Following an ever-increasing collection of sexually-related allegations, Howard University has stripped Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs of his honorary degree.
Originally conferred upon the former superstar rapper in 2014, the degree has now been rescinded by the historically Black, Washington DC institution that stated “behavior as captured in a recently released video is so fundamentally incompatible with Howard University’s core values and beliefs that he is deemed no longer worthy to hold the institution’s highest honor”.
In addition to removing the degree, the university also confirmed the end to a scholarship in the musician’s name and the termination of his 2016 “gift agreement.”
The claims against Combs came to a head in November of 2023 when his ex-partner and R&B singer Cassie Ventura filed a lawsuit against the artist, alleging physical and sexual abuse. Though originally refuted by Diddy, both parties settled the lawsuit “to mutual satisfaction” a day after the case was filed.
Six months later in May, a video surfaced and published by CNN, showing Diddy attacking Ventura in a hotel, the footage of which confirmed Cassie’s allegations.
In another potential rescinding of honor, New York City mayor Eric Adams has been under pressure from council members to take back the keys to the city previously given to Combs who was honored last September before the current allegations surfaced.
