In honor ofΒ Stephen Sondheim, the legendary lyricist and composer, whoΒ passed away at 91 on FridayΒ (11.26,)Β Lin-Manuel Miranda,Β Sara BareillesΒ andΒ Josh GrobanΒ and theΒ BroadwayΒ community came together on Sunday (11.29) to perform a heartfelt rendition of βSundayβ β the final song inΒ Sunday in the Park with GeorgeΒ (for which the lyricist won the Pulitzer Prize in 1985.)
In lieu of a traditional speech Miranda read part of Sondheimβs Look, I Made A Hat to the crowd:
βOnce during the writing of each show, I cry at a notion, a word, a chord, a melodic idea, an accompaniment figure.β In [βSunday in the Park with Georgeβ], it was the word βforeverβ in βSundayββ¦I was suddenly moved by the contemplation of what these people would have thought if theyβd know they were being immortalized.β
Following the performance, Bareilles told Variety, βThis felt like churchβ¦in his remembrance, we did what theater does best. We sang and raised our voices and came together in community.β and she reposted black and white photos from the event to her Twitter feed, writing, βsuch a joy. a tremendously aching joy.β
βEverybody whoβs here has a touchstone for why Sondheimβs music has brought them to this place,β stated Groban. βAnd whatever part of the entertainment industry weβre in, everybody is here because we were first influenced by Sondheimβs music. To mourn his passing is a crushing blow.β
