As part of Sam Smith‘s new live album, Love Goes: Live at Abbey Road Studios, they delivered a cover of Cyndi Lauper‘s iconic “Time After Time.”
Arriving March 19th, the performance features Smith singing a heartfelt rendition of Lauper’s 1983 timeless classic as the backing band captures the original’s slick but tender instrumentation. The Capitol Records artist keeps the vocals soft but adds just the right amount of emotion on the hook: “If you’re lost you can look and you will find me/Time after time.”
In addition to the performance, the 28-year-old crooner shared a 20-minute conversation with Lauper, as the pair discuss “Time After Time,” with Smith saying that while the song has always filled them with melancholy and longing, “It just made me so happy to sing.”
Recorded at Abbey Road with a full band, Smith’s cover of “Time After Time” and the rest of Love Goes: Live at Abbey Road Studios was taken from the artist’s only live performance of last year. The 13-song set primarily features songs from Sam’s 2020 album, Love Goes — including a collaboration with Labrinth on the title-track — though it also includes reinterpretations of early hits like “Lay Me Down” and “Stay With Me.”
