The 2021 Golden Globe nominations have been announced and the musical nominees have voiced their excitement via social media.
Canvassing multiple categories, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Original Score and more, the best musical minds and performers were noticed for their contributions in film, including nominee Lin Manuel Miranda, who was “so grateful” to be acknowledged for his Broadway musical-turned-Disney+ film Hamilton.
Tiara Thomas, Sam Ashworth and Daniel Pemberton were recognized for their collective involvement in the Best Original Song – motion picture category. Thomas co-wrote “Fight For You” with H.E.R. for Judas and the Black Messiah. Ashworth co-wrote “Speak Now” with Leslie Odom Jr., who portrayed Sam Cooke in Regina King’s directorial debut One Night in Miami. And Pemberton co-wrote “Hear My Voice” with Celeste for The Trial of the Chicago 7. Andra Day and Raphael Saadiq were also nominated for their song “Tigress & Tweed” from The United States vs. Billie Holiday.
Though not nominated for any 2020 work of his own, Common praised Regina King for her historic nomination as Best Director – motion picture for One Night in Miami. “@ReginaKing is now the second Black woman in history to earn a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Director for her film One Night In Miami. The first was @Ava back in 2015 for her film #Selma,” the decorated Grammy-winning rapper wrote.

Set to take place on February 28th at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT on NBC, the 78th annual Golden Globe Awards will be hosted (for the fourth time) by friends and longtime SNL cast members Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
