Following a death threat made against the singer ahead of his Ottawa, Canadian his performance, Morrissey decided to cancel two recent shows in the United States.
Following a threat prior to the artist’s performance at a music festival last week, a 26-year-old man from Ottawa has since been arrested and later released on bail for allegedly uttering a threat to kill the iconic musician (born Steven Morrissey.) And though the show went on as scheduled, the situation prompted the cancellation of two subsequent concerts in Massachusetts and Connecticut.
Confirming the decision on Instagram, a statement from the Boston venue, the MGM Music Hall at Fenway read “In recent days, there has been a credible threat on Morrissey’s life. Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of both the artist and the band, tomorrow’s engagement at the MGM Music Hall at Fenway has been canceled.”
Prior to launching a successful solo career in 1987, Morrissey initially rose to fame as the frontman of the legendary rock band The Smiths. Famous for his outspoken points of view on animal welfare and political issues, the British-born musician’s career has often been marred by controversy as in 2006, when he refused to tour in Canada in protest of the country’s annual seal hunt.
Recent concert cancellations magnify the severe security concerns that artists can face while on tour and fans holding tickets to the Boston and Connecticut shows were informed of the cancellations and advised to seek refunds.
